Intro

The Kopiko brevet is in ifs 2nd year, from all accounts the Route is challenging and varied and passes through a unique slice of rural NZ. The event is organised by the Kennett Brothers a family name ubiquitously associated w all forms of biking in NZ. The new post covid normal means the 2021 event will be very much a look into the ‘kiwiana’ of the brevet scene.

The Kopiko Brevet has quickly become one of the most talked about gravel events in the country, I want to check out this challenging, remote landscape and meet the special type of folk who live here and those that want to take on this beast of a course

Scope

The brevet scene in NZ has shot up out of nowhere in the past 10 years to become a legitimate recreational user group and a contributor to the rural sectors income due to the demand for hospitality, accommodation and transport services.

The unsung hero’s of these events are sometimes the locals, called ‘trail fairies’ who support a multitude of riders. What do the riders feel about the interactions with locals, what do the locals make of the riders? The intent is to ride the event and capture the atmosphere, landscapes and stories of interactions Deane has with both riders and the public on his first major bikepacking event.

TrackmeNZ has been a loyal supporter through tracking services of many adventure/backcountry events in NZ. The film will feature the importance of good navigation and back up communications to negotiate a challenging course like Kopiko.

The intention is to produce a made for film festival audience, professional quality 15-25’min film, to enter in a major film festival for selection. Accompanied with high res images and quality editorial. The film will then be released online for free at a to be confirmed platform/s.
